You can’t pull the wool over God’s eyes…

“If a person climbs over or through the fence of a sheep pen instead of going through the gate, you know he’s up to no good….” John 10:1

imageAs a teenager, I crawled over a fence to steal a pumpkin. Confession is supposedly good for the soul. Actually, I didn’t get a pumpkin–my conscience kicked in just in time to keep me from becoming a thief. However, I did climb through the fence with the intension of doing something risky and wrong.

Jesus uses another great parable to explain the best way to get to God. He uses sheep–an animal that has no reasoning power. However, they are smart enough to know the sound of their shepherd’s voice. Jesus is referring to us when we act like sheep. He calls to us and keeps the gate open at all times. There’s no need to try to sneak through a fence.¬†Afterall, no one can¬†pull the wool over his eyes. Hmmm, perhaps it’s this prable that gave us this little phrase.

Lord, you know I can’t get anything past you–or my conscience–a gift from you. Amen.
